Raise a hand and we stop

Amoskeag Dental is a one-dentist office for adults who dread the chair. Before we begin you pick a signal, and when you use it, everything pauses.

Staying comfortable

Seven ways to make the visit yours

You can ask for any of these at any visit, and you don't have to say why.

A signal that stops everything

Before we start, we agree on a signal. Most people raise a hand. When you use it, Dr. Aiyar stops, sits back and waits until you say go on. She will not ask you to explain.

Breaks, on request or on a schedule

Ask for a break whenever you like, or ask us to pause on our own every few minutes to check in. Sit up, sip water, look out the window, then decide.

Headphones

Bring your own or borrow a pair of ours. Music, a podcast or an audiobook all work. We tap your shoulder or lift a hand so you know when we need you.

A blanket and a pillow

A warm blanket, a neck pillow and a lamp instead of the bright light, if you'd like them. Tell us what helps and we will set the room before you sit down.

Every step named, or none

Some people want to hear each step before it happens and handle the instruments first. Others want quiet. We do what you ask, and you can change your mind midway.

Nitrous oxide, if you want it

A gas you breathe through a small mask over your nose. You stay awake and can talk. It is the one kind of sedation we offer.

About nitrous oxide

A quiet time of day

Ask for the first appointment of the day, or one at the end of the week, so you aren't waiting with a racing mind in a full room.

Our limits

What we don't offer, and where we send you

Dr. Aiyar offers local numbing and nitrous oxide, and nothing stronger. If you need more, she refers you to a dentist or oral surgeon who offers it, and sends your records with your say-so.

  • No IV sedation

Sedation through a vein needs a state permit and a second person watching your breathing and heart. We don't give it.

  • No sedation pills

A pill taken before the visit means someone must drive you and the effect is hard to adjust. We don't offer it.

  • No general anesthesia

That is a service for a surgeon's office or a hospital. We refer you there when it is the right choice.

The first visit

We start at the table, not in the chair

You sit across from Dr. Aiyar, with your shoes on and your questions first.

She asks what you dread and what has gone wrong before, and she listens. We look at your mouth only when you're ready. If that isn't today, we plan the next visit around what you told us, and you leave with nothing done to you.

What it includes

  • A talk before anything else

  • Your signal agreed and written in your chart

  • An exam when you say so

  • A written estimate before any treatment

Nitrous oxide

One gas, with someone beside you the whole time

Nitrous oxide takes the edge off. It doesn't take the visit away.

You breathe it through a small mask over your nose, mixed with oxygen. You stay awake and can talk, and you can ask us to turn it down or off. Dr. Aiyar and Nallely stay with you and watch your breathing and how you feel throughout, and the effect wears off in minutes after we stop. Some people feel light-headed or queasy, and it isn't right for everyone, so we talk it through first.

Before you call

A few questions first

What if I've avoided the dentist for years?

You're welcome here. Dr. Aiyar doesn't scold. The first visit is a talk, and what happens next is up to you.

Can I stop in the middle of a visit?

Yes, at any point. Use your signal and we stop. We can pause, sit you up, or end the visit and plan the next one.

Do you offer IV sedation or sedation pills?

No. We offer local numbing and nitrous oxide. If you need more, we refer you to a dentist or oral surgeon who offers it.

Can I bring someone with me?

Yes. A friend or family member can sit in the room if you'd like, or wait in the front. Tell us which.

Will you give me a price before we start?

Yes. You get a written estimate before any treatment. It lists each step and its fee, and you can take it home.

Ask for a time that suits you

Send a request and Symone will call, text or email you with a time. You can tell her about your signal when you arrive.
