Cleanings and exams
A cleaning removes plaque and tartar and an exam checks your teeth and gums, for adults who would like both done slowly.
Step by step
What happens
- 01
Step 1: We talk first
Constance asks how you'd like the visit to go, and you pick your signal.
- 02
Step 2: The cleaning
She works one section at a time, names each tool and pauses when you ask. You can sit up between sections.
- 03
Step 3: The exam
Dr. Aiyar looks at your teeth and gums and shows you what she sees. X-rays are taken only if she thinks you need them.
- 04
Step 4: The plan
She explains what, if anything, needs treatment, in what order, and what each option costs in writing.
Good to know
Staying comfortable
Headphones, a blanket and breaks are there for the asking. Nitrous oxide is available if you want it for a cleaning.
Ways to stay comfortableIf you wait
Plaque and tartar that stay on the teeth can irritate the gums over time. Dr. Aiyar tells you what she sees and the choice stays with you.
Risks and after-care
Gums can feel sore or bleed a little after a cleaning, and teeth can be sensitive for a day or two. Call us if soreness lasts or you are worried.
How it is billed
You get a written estimate before we start, with each step and its fee. We file claims with your plan where we can.

Questions about cleanings and exams
How often should I come in?
Dr. Aiyar decides with you, based on what she sees in your mouth. It is not the same for everyone.
Can we do half the cleaning today?
Yes. We can split a cleaning across two visits if one is too much.
Do I need X-rays?
Only if Dr. Aiyar thinks they will help her see something she can't see by looking. She explains why before she takes any.
What is a deep cleaning?
A deeper cleaning below the gumline when gums have pulled away from the teeth. Dr. Aiyar tells you if you need one and why, and quotes it in writing.
