Nitrous oxide

Nitrous oxide is a gas you breathe through a small mask to take the edge off a visit, mixed with oxygen, while you stay awake.

Step by step

What happens

  1. 01

    Step 1: We ask first

We go over your health history on the patient portal and talk through whether nitrous oxide suits you.

  2. 02

    Step 2: The mask

A small mask sits over your nose. You breathe in as usual. You can say if it feels wrong and we adjust or stop.

  3. 03

    Step 3: During the visit

Dr. Aiyar gives the gas and Nallely stays beside you, watching your breathing and how you feel. You can talk.

  4. 04

    Step 4: Afterward

We switch to oxygen and the effect wears off within minutes. Most people can drive home, and we check with you first.

Good to know

  • Staying comfortable

This is the only sedation we offer. We do not give IV sedation, sedation pills or general anesthesia, and we refer you if you need them.

    Ways to stay comfortable
  • If you wait

Without it, many procedures are still possible, with local numbing, breaks and headphones. Nitrous oxide is a choice, not a requirement.

  • Risks and after-care

Some people feel light-headed, queasy or tingly. It isn't right for everyone, including some people with certain breathing conditions or in early pregnancy, so we ask first and Dr. Aiyar decides with you.

  • How it is billed

You get a written estimate before we start, with each step and its fee. We file claims with your plan where we can.

Questions about nitrous oxide

Will I be asleep?

No. You stay awake, you can talk, and you can ask us to stop.

Who gives it and how is it monitored?

Dr. Aiyar gives it, and Nallely stays with you throughout. They watch your breathing and how you feel.

Can I drive home?

Most people can, because the effect wears off within minutes. We check with you before you leave.

What if I want something stronger?

Dr. Aiyar refers you to an oral surgeon or a dentist who offers IV or oral sedation or general anesthesia, and sends your records with your permission.
